Things are getting FUNKY at Mardons, as The Soul Strutters make their debut, on Saturday, 9th February.

NEW BANDS AND NEW FACES

The early part of the year has seen continued success at Mardon, with lots of great new bands joining us on Saturday Nights - We've enjoyed some terrific performances from The Raskals, Jet Pack Jesus and of course Punk On Your Hits. Having variety is important and it keeps things interesting, so being lucky enough to book Punk On Your Hits, following their massively successful support slot for S Club and 5ive, was great and we had lots of fun seeing them perform.

Returning bands are great, some of our favourites have already played this year and many will be back later in 2018 - one of the craziest nights we've ever had came from the mighty Hair Of The Dog, their popularity is growing massively and the club was at capacity for their appearance. We thank everyone for their patience at the bar - and of course thank our wonderful staff for their hard work - it really was an unprecidented turn out, and the band certainly didn't disappoint ... they were awesome, well done HOTD!

With a great mix of music on offer and suited to all ages and tastes, the social club is keen to be as inclusive as possible and to allow all guests an enjoyable night out in a safe environment. The weekly entertainment is free to everyone, members and non-members alike and new faces are always welcome at Mardons, so please spread the word, tell your friends and join us when you can.

TOM TALKS LIVE SHOW ON THURSDAY 8th MARCH

Three community minded groups are coming together for one very special night.

Tom Bradey, presenter of the Tom Talks Show, on community radio station, Somer Valley FM, this year celebrates five years of his show, and to mark the occasion has organised a line up of inspiring and esteemed musicians and vocalist to perform at a music event that will be recorded and broadcast on the station. The evening will be staged at Mardons Social Club, Midsomer Norton, on Thursday, 8th March. We at Mardons, have wholeheartedly embraced the event making it a rare ticket only evening.

The night will raise funds for chosen local charity SWALLOW, who themselves are marking a successful 25 years of their work. The charity provides much needed support for teenagers and adults with learning disabilities in Bath and North East Somerset. The charity is led by its members, and responds to individual needs by providing flexible support. Over the years they have become an invaluable asset with both their members and staff giving so much back to the community.

Aiming to appeal to all ages and tastes, The Tom Talks LIVE Show boasts an impressive and eclectic mix that celebrates music in all its forms.

GEORGIA MANN is a young vocalist with a bright future. Having won favour performing at talent shows, she has also impressed as part of local drama group Exit Stage Left.

WADE MERRITT is a proving to be a very credible, rising young artist, an acoustic singer-songwriter who's not afraid to tackle covers and p his own twist on a song! The Wiltshire based lad notes his influences as The Beatles and Queen, and with impressive vocals and musicality, his original material is a well-crafted credit to him as his catalogue continues to grow.

JOE CARREYETT is a young singer-songwriter, bringing an interesting folk fusion to the evening. The intriguing mix is the result of being raised on a diet of rock music like AC/DC and Scorpions through to the sounds of folk and acoustic music like Eva Cassidy. From soft, simple tones from the warm strings on the guitar to the rapid orchestral feel from the piano, the synchronised approach of the instruments bring out an atmospheric, and emotional surround sound that will tug at everyone’s heart strings.

  Saint Loe

SAINT LOE convincingly bring a modern-day pop sound back to the live band scene. Ben, Danny and twins, Dan and Alex have been gigging the South West of England and beyond, building a solid fan base at shows and a large online presence. Having featured on line-ups with Katy B, Jamie Lawson and Kodaline they are all set for more of the festival scene this year.
These guys have a sound, and a look that is excitingly, and authentically their own. With a quartet of vocal harmony talent, and masterly musicians to boot their blue-eyed ballads seethe with passion, while their endearing, catchy, feelgood anthems certainly pop!.

  Jack Moore   Jenny Peplow Singers

JACK MOORE is a renowned multi-instrumentalist and songer/songwriter from Calne. Rounding off the the night, he is a versatile and out-of-the-box performer. Jack strives to create music which is fresh and free from the shackles and influence of trend. His stage demeanour is charming, unique and on-the-edge-of-awkward. Generally performing rock music on an acoustic guitar, Jack will be performing with full band COMPACT PUSSYCAT to deliver bombastic grooves to get toes tapping and hips wiggling.

THE JENNY PEPLOW SINGERS are a group of more than 45 women of all ages who get together to enjoy the power of music. Formed in 2011, over the years they have gone from strength to strength, winning awards, while keeping it fun. Known for their lively, professional performances and a varied repertoire of music, they say: “Singing is good for the soul, it helps people on so many levels ... singing can build confidence, self-esteem and general well-being.”

The Kids Christmas party has become a huge free event over the last few years and this year saw the entertainment team playing games and issuing prizes to what appears to have been the busiest yet. Santa arrived (after a slight hold up) to a rapturous welcome by the very excited children and there was a terrific atmosphere throughout the afternoon, so hopefully the kids and parents enjoyed it as much as the organisers!

MORE THINGS HAPPENING AT MARDONS

There's a lot more going on at Mardons behind the scenes than it appears to most visitors. A number of community groups are now enjoying the hospitality of the club and are making great use of the available space during the day.

For some time the Mardons Pensioners Group have been based at the club, meeting on the third Wednesday of the month. This year, they have organised a ticketed Cabaret evening on Saturday, 25th March, and will be donating money raised from the night to charity, in memory of long standing and popular member, Sid Body, who sadly passed away last year.

Recently joining Mardons for new regular coffee mornings are the Carers Centre. Organiser, Lorraine Frapwell commented: “The Carers’ Centre is a local charity that supports people who are looking after someone. This might be because they are disabled, ill, frail or have any number of challenges. Very often, looking after someone can lead to isolation. To try and prevent this from happening, and to help Carers fully access their local communities, we are holding a number of free Coffee Mornings at Mardons, where people can get together and chat over a cuppa."

The Coffee mornings are held monthly (10 a.m.– noon, 6th February, 13th March and 10th April). All carers are welcome and you can also take along the person you care for if you wish as the club is fully accessible.

Following a similar format, a new autism support group has been founded by local woman, Sophie Tucker. Her coffee mornings and social gatherings are now being held regularly for parents, carers and families of children with autism or those going through the diagnosis process. She has a Facebook page 'Autism Support Coffee Mornings' and anyone wanting to know more is encouraged to get in touch.

Mardons have often enjoyed visits from the wonderful staff and service users at the Swallow Charity, for their discos, meetings and skittles evenings and are pleased to work with any community group or local charity whenever possible.

The club is now preparing for a number of charitable events in the next few months, firstly a race night on Friday, 10th February. Money raised on the night will, on this occasion, go to the Carers' Centre. Another subsequent race night is in the pipeline and is expected to be in aid of a Spinal Muscular Atrophy charity.

The club's popular quiz night returns on Friday, 24th February and the this time the night will benefit St Johns Ambulance. The format remains the same with teams of 4-6 people and entry fee of £2.50 per person. The nights are always well attended so its a fun night out while benefiting a worthy cause.

One of the most eagerly anticipated fundraisers to be planned planned is the 80s Fancy Dress Party, which is on Friday, 24th March. The evening is a ticketed event, at £5 per person, and will raise funds for Kilmersdon School PTA to help with a number of planned projects. It's the very exciting debut of 2 Tribes - live music with the stunning vocals of Nic Price, who many will remember from Retro Electro, who previously performed at Mardons, they will be joined on stage by 'walkman' their robotic dancer!
